The novel runs along the same lines as the graphic book and the comics (reviewed here). It has the same loveable characters. However, the novel gives more detail, humor and depth to the story. And, it takes the reader through the challenging adventure of life through the ice ages.
The story line is full of fast action, leading the reader from one busy, exciting chapter to the next. Readers will not get bored nor want to put the book down until it is finished.
The author is able to very successfully weave three story elements into one easy flowing read. First, it is the adventure novel itself. Browser, the huge, loving, gentle mammoth becomes devoted to the young native and his tribe. The characters are intertwined from one episode to another and the reader is transfixed with anticipation as to what happens next and which endearing character will save the day.
The second story element is the life events of a time in history long ago. The Native Americans living during the ice age faced amazing life-threatening obstacles just trying to exist. The story shows a true picture of what it must have been like to travel great distances for food and depend on nature for their very survival, when nature itself is sometimes their worst enemy.
The third element is the strong influence that faith can have in life against all odds. Without their faith in Father Sky and The Spirit of the Forest, the natives would have been overcome many times, but their diligence to their beliefs and the strength to persevere is shown over and over. It is a natural part of their character.
Richard de Montebello is very adapt at exciting the reader constantly while weaving through the action a feeling of true love, honor and of faith during one of history’s most dangerous ages. All this is done with humor throughout. There are laughs at every corner of the book, even through the most exciting, dangerous parts of the story.
This novel will entertain readers of any age. It is action-packed, inspiring and humorous!
