This is a graphic novel, different from comic books by its sturdy pages and, of course, length. It is the first of a series. This book is funny, adventuresome, and yet is true to the history and life of a previous age. Children of all ages will enjoy the tale of a small boy learning the secrets to life and happiness. Through the entertaining pages, there run values such as family, loyalty, friendship and caring. The parents of young readers will appreciate the essence of Father Sky and The Spirit of the Forest. They represent a loving Father and guardian angel sent to watch over and protect all life. Yes, she even protects the ones that go astray sometimes.
Sequoia has a unique quality, that only he possesses, of relating to the animals. His adventures in this graphic novel are humorous, exciting and there is even a villain to add to the suspense. But his family and the Spirit watch over him and guide him through love and kindness. He is a very loveable leading character. His animal friends are also humorous and protecting.
I recommend this book for children of all ages. They will highly enjoy the story as it progresses, and will look forward to the next chapter. The drawings are so expressive; it is easy to follow the thoughts and actions of the characters. Richard deMontebello has, again, come up with a wonderful way to entertain as well as instill values in stories for children.
